Nathan Zhang or “Xiangzi,” is the founder of brandnü project. Born in Liaoning, Nathan is a designer and communications professional with a passion for connecting creative communities with rural artisans. Nathan was first inspired to found brandnü while living and working abroad in Canada, where he studied leading models of social enterprise. In 2008, Nathan and his wife moved back to China with a mission: to help rural women. Through brandnü, Nathan aims to build bridges between East and West that promote China’s socially-conscious designers and entrepreneurs. He is working hard to make brandnü a place where love can be received and spread to others.

More than half the population in China lives in rural areas with living standards much lower than those in the cities. With little to no education, and very limited marketable skills, the status of women in rural areas is pitifully low. Many international and Chinese NGOs are working towards improving conditions for rural women. Many have started handicrafts projects to enable rural women to work towards some degree of economic independence. While many rural women have unusual embroidery skills, their finished products still lack innovation and flair. Design, if any, is dated, conventional and rarely takes into account market preference. Most NGOs/social enterprises cannot afford the necessary product designers and/or marketing resources nor do they have the proper retail space. As a result, poorly designed handicrafts are being purchased by fewer customers, and usually as trinkets instead of the piece of artwork that they can be. Most of these well meaning projects continue to struggle and the rural women in China are not significantly better off than before.

brandnü accomplishments:

Established in the fall of 2009, brandnü is Beijing’s first charity-focused store that carries exclusively ethically sourced and eco-friendly goods made by rural women from different NGOs and social enterprises projects. The majority of brandnü artisans are female, disabled or unemployed and the network is partnered with “Rural Women,” a local development organization.

In July 2010, brandnü organized and hosted the “First Beijing’s Ethical Trade Fair,” which will bring together over one dozen artisan groups, NGO representatives, and entrepreneurs to promote fair and ethical trade in China. The event is supported by China’s most prominent womens’ rights advocate, Wu Qing. Over the past year, brandnü has led a variety of charity projects including building two rural libraries in partnership with Dulwich British School, and hosting an exhibition of works by artists from the Beijing Huiling Community for people with learning disabilities.

Covered extensively in local media and supported by Beijing’s emerging and established artists, brandnü is recognized for its work connecting the energy of young urban designers with the age-old traditions of Chinese craftsmanship. A broad network of design and fashion professionals have supported brandnü projects and plan to contribute to future collaborations that build new resources for China’s female rural artisans.

In the Fall of 2010, brandnü will launch its first branded product in partnership with Femmes du Ningxia and Fashion designers Na Zhang. This product launch will build the foundation for a line of high-end, ethically produced handicraft and clothing products that will fuse China’s rural history and urban energy into globally relevant goods.
